Surroundings

Rio Hotel is situated at the beginning of Castello ward, one bridge away from St. Mark's square, in the very heart of the city.

Castello is one of the six Venetian districts, and it takes its name from the Medieval fortification that was built to defend the city from the attacks coming from the sea. It is the biggest and most populated area of the whole island, plenty of touristic attractions and where the Biennale expositions are held from May to November. Home of some of the most beautiful Venetian churches like “San Zaccaria”, “Santa Maria Formosa”, “San Giovanni e Paolo” (where you can find the previous Serenissima Republic rulers' graves), monuments like “Arsenale” (a complex of former shipyards and armories clustered together) and “San Pietro di Castello” cathedral. Located in a privileged area, our Guests can fully enjoy wonderful strolls in the city centre and reach every major attraction with ease.

Rio Hotel Venezia is hosted in two different buildings: a two-storey historical palace overlooking Campo SS Filippo e Giacomo and a three-storey outbuilding that is accessible from the main building courtyard. The hotel can boast centuries of history. In the XVIII century, from the 1705 to the 1722, the main structure was the house of the famous composer Antonio Vivaldi and his extended family, whereas our annex buildings gave hospitality to the Benedictine nuns of the close Monastery of San Zaccaria. Nowadays all these buildings have been completely renovated (last time at the end of 2014) with a polished and modern style, but recalling the typical Venetian decor.
